Mickey Mouse made his debut on Nov. 18, 1928, and was so popular that there was a push by Disney and others to get more Mickey out into the world. In the autumn of 1930, the first Mickey Mouse Book was published by Bibo-Lang. The initial copies were offered exclusively in movie theaters, but there are was such a popular demand that a second printing was done in December 1930.
Presented is a rare first printing of the premiere issue of ”Mickey Mouse Book” debuting Mickey Mouse in book form. Published by Walter E. Disney in 1930, as required of the first printing. In 1930, Disney began to promote the anthropomorphic mouse via a comic strip, this magazine and the first Mickey Mouse Club. Merchandising in the form of dolls would also begin in 1930, although it wasn’t until several years later with the launch of Mickey Mouse watches, at the height of the Depression, that the character really took off with American families. Sixteen page book has games, stories and sheet music. Measures 9” x 12”. The cut-out game piece found on pages 9-10 is missing here, common to the issue. Light foxing to front cover and mild wear, otherwise in near fine condition with vibrant green pages.
In the end, over 100,000 books were produced over four printings. Included in the book was the story of Mickey Mouse, a Mickey Mouse Game, Mickey Mouse March and a Mickey Mouse Song entitled “Mickey Mouse (‘You Cute Little Feller’) with accompanying arrangement for the ukulele. The story was written by the daughter of one of the publishers, Bobette Bibo. Mickey’s story was just her first. Bibo went on to write a number of books, including “Katzimo, Mysterious Mesa” and “Pigboat 39 (An American Sub Goes to War).”
