Presented is a pair of red boxing shorts that were owned/worn by Dolph Lundgren as Ivan Drago in the film Rocky IV. Most noteworthy, the style was worn during the iconic end fighting scene against Rocky Balboa. In the film, the fight itself showcases a photo style match.

The red silky shorts with yellow trim (waistband and lined sides) show heavy wear from sweat/age and storage with staining throughout. A size (L) tag is sewn in the interior. Also embroidered on the iconic costume is the Soviet Union’s star, gold hammer and sickle in yellow. Note, the important provenance detail as they were obtained with other Rocky related memorabilia and  several of Lundgren’s personal items in an auction. Dolph Lundgren is a Swedish actor, filmmaker, and martial artist. Lundgren made his acting debut in 1985 with a cameo in the James Bond film A View to a Kill. Also that year, he had his breakthrough in Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky IV, in which he played the lead villain as the imposing Soviet boxer Ivan Drago.

“Dolph Lundgren was chosen out of nearly 4,000 men who auditioned for the part of Ivan Drago. He was incredibly large, powerful, and intelligent, and because he was a world champion, he already knew how to move as a great fighter. I wanted to design a uniform, a boxing outfit, for him that was unlike any that ever been seen before. We worked on emphasizing his shoulders and his menacing appearance while also paying respect to the Soviet Union, flagrantly showing his allegiance to that country and how proud he was. The boots themselves are also amazing with the wings on the back. Lundgren was perfectly cast in this role and his outfit just emphasized how good he was in the part.”

In the film Rocky IV, Rocky Balboa (played by Sylvester Stallone) accompanies his friend Apollo Creed to the ring in a boxing match against a Russian Boxer named Ivan Drago (played by Lundgren). Drago is too strong for Creed, and unfortunately kills him in his match. Balboa blames himself for Creed’s death and is determined to defeat Drago in a boxing match. He gains the help of Creed’s former manager, Duke and travels to U.S.S.R. to take on Drago. Rocky then faces the ultimate challenge and fights for his life. Ultimately, Rocky is victorious in a grueling battle with the Russian fighter.
