Wow – what a tremendous opportunity to own a great vintage Ray McKay game worn hockey jersey. This jersey was from the 1977-78 Edmonton Oilers that were part of the WHA. The white durene gamer is tagged in the collar as a Rawlings Size “48” and also has a “Steichens Associated Sales” tag in the hem. This game-worn WHA Oilers beauty features blue with orange outline tackle twill number “4”, orange, white and blue tackle twill team crest. Both of the sleeves also have a layered blue/orange tackle twill sewn on “4”. The blue tackle twill surname letters “McKAY” sewn onto a white nameplate. The jersey has no fight strap but there’s a loop inside the interior.
Overall, the jersey show tremendous war throughout with scrapes, repairs, discolorations, black/stick marks, holes, loose threading/identifiers etc. All out wear through and through! Even in the most complete WHA gamer collections, you would have a hard time finding complete jerseys. Overall. a fantastic game-worn jersey from McKay and the WHA Oilers.
The Oilers were founded in 1971 by W. D. “Wild Bill” Hunter and Dr. Chuck Allard and played its first season in 1972–73 as one of the twelve founding franchises of the major professional World Hockey Association (WHA). They were intended to be one of two WHA Alberta teams along with the Calgary Broncos. However, when the Broncos relocated and became the Cleveland Crusaders before the WHA’s first season began, the team was named the Alberta Oilers. They were renamed the Edmonton Oilers the following year and subsequently joined the NHL in 1979 as one of four franchises absorbed through the NHL–WHA merger.
