Description

Presented is an opportunity to own a great vintage Alton White game worn hockey jersey. This jersey was from the 1973-74 Los Angeles Sharks that were part of the WHA. The red crimson durene gamer is tagged in the inside of the tail – Goodman & Sons [size] 46. Serif-style white letters individually applied on the back, “WHITE”. The chest features the striking embroidered tackle-twill shark logo.  Both of the sleeves also have a layered black/white tackle twill sewn on “23”. The jersey has a small fight strap the interior. Overall, the jersey show tremendous war throughout with scrapes, repairs, discolorations, black/stick marks, holes, loose threading/identifiers etc. All out wear through and through! Even in the most complete WHA gamer collections, you would have a hard time finding complete jerseys. Overall. a fantastic rare game-worn jersey from White and even more scarce WHA Sharks.

Alton White is best known for being the second player of African descent, after Willie O’Ree, to have played on a professional major league ice hockey team and for being the first hockey player of African descent to score 20 goals in a single season for a major league team. He scored 21 goals and 21 assists for the Los Angeles Sharks during the 1972-73 season.

The Los Angeles Sharks were an ice hockey team that played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1972 to 1974. Their primary home arena was the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena but they sometimes played at the Long Beach Sports Arena when the Sports Arena had other contractual obligations. After the 1973–74 season, the franchise moved to Detroit to become the Michigan Stags and again mid-season to Baltimore to become the Baltimore Blades. The Sharks could not capitalize on their successful first season and sank to last place in their second year. They had the league’s worst record, scored the fewest goals, and allowed the second most goals. This drop off coincided with a resurgence across town by the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, who qualified for the playoffs in the 1973–74 season for the first time in five years.
