In The Godfather, Marlon Brando was given sole star-billing for the title role, but those who have enjoyed the series recognize that this is really Michael Corleone’s journey. Ironically, Paramount Pictures resisted Coppola’s choice of Brando for the lead role. Of his many unforgettable roles Brando will be most remembered best as Don Vito Corleone. Brando had a reputation among studio executives and directors as being one of the most difficult actors to work with during filming. Coppola’s insistence won out and Brando gave to the movie what was hailed as his most magnificent performance. Brando, was nominated in the leading category at the Oscars for the film and won.

Amongst the movie industry’s most elusive and untouchable actors was Marlon Brando. Brando spent the greater part of his final years as a recluse on his tropical island. The acquisition of his autograph was particularly difficult during his career not only because he made himself inaccessible but he was also aloof to the public. In the years following The Godfather,” Brando’s roles were limited partly because he set his demands higher than any other actor would dare. Many critics consider Brando the greatest actor of his time.

The Godfather story opens with a series of vignettes surrounding a large wedding on a private estate in 1945. In the backroom office, Don Vito Corleone (Oscar-winner Marlon Brando) receives pleas for assistance or retribution. He listens quietly to these requests while petting a docile cat on his lap, and when he comments, it’s mostly about relationships and how important they are to him. Being a good father or husband, respecting family and friendship … that’s what counts. This is a barter system of “personal favors,” granted out of love and honor, to be paid back in full by future “favors” yet unknown.

We are then taken outside on the lawn, to the wedding reception of Vito Corleone’s daughter Carla (Talia Shire) to Carlo Rizzi (Gianni Russo). Throughout the singing, dancing, and celebrating, we follow Vito’s youngest son Michael (Al Pacino), a decorated marine, as he introduces his girlfriend Kay (Diane Keaton) to the rest of his family. Michael is fully aware of what they do, but he is an outsider, uninvolved with the daily activities of the “family business”. They gather for an official wedding portrait, and Michael insists that Kay join him by his side for the photo, physically inviting her into their world. It is where the audience is also invited into their world.

The Godfather” is both a testament to this historical film and a magnificent actor. The mesmerizing display (28″ x 38 ″) featuring the famed wedding scene photo with all the main characters centered around a superb blue signature on a cut “9-10″of Marlon Brando. It is followed by Al Pacino, Robert Duvall, Mario Puzo, Francis Coppola, Diane Kenton, Talia Shire, James Caan and John Marly.
