Wow – what a tremendous opportunity to own a great vintage game worn hockey jersey. This jersey was from the 1974-79 Indianapolis Racers that were part of th WHA. The red, white and blue jersey displays the embroidered Racers patch logo centrally and each one of the sleeves has a layered red/blue tackle twill sewn on “9”. The reverse also features a sewn on in red/blue tackle twill “9”. Note, the name was removed from the verso which was a common practice in the 1970’s to recycle forward. Although the player designation is unknown, some of the players for the Racers that wore #9 over the span of years were Claude Larose, Connie Forey, Teg Thomas, Ron Buchanan and others. The tag in the collar is from Rawlings [size] 48. The jersey has a small portion of a fight strap. Overall, the jersey show tremendous war throughout with scrapes, discolorations, black marks, stick marks, holes, loose threading/identifiers etc.
The Indianapolis Racers were a major league ice hockey team that played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 1974 to 1978. They competed in four full seasons before folding 25 games into the 1978–79 season. They played at Market Square Arena. They were the first professional team to secure Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier.
The 1974–75 WHA season was the third season of the World Hockey Association. Fourteen teams each played 78 games. The WHA expanded by adding the Indianapolis Racers and Phoenix Roadrunners, and splitting into 3 divisions (Western, Eastern, and Canadian). The top two teams in each division qualified for the playoffs along with the two next best teams overall. Prior to the season, Southern California welcomed the Jersey Knights, who moved to San Diego and became the Mariners, and said goodbye to the Los Angeles Sharks, who moved to Detroit and became the Michigan Stags. Midway through the season, the Stags moved to Baltimore and became the Blades; they folded for good after the season. Chicago also folded at season’s end. Also, the New England Whalers left Boston for Hartford, but played the first half of the season in Springfield, Massachusetts until construction on the Hartford Civic Center was finished.
