Description
Larry Bird is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He is the only person in NBA history to be named Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player, Finals MVP, All-Star MVP, Coach of the Year, and Executive of the Year.
After leading the Celtics to a 29–5 start to the 1990–91 season, Larry Bird missed 22 games due to a compressed nerve root in his back, a condition that eventually led to his retirement. He had off-season surgery to remove a disc from his back, but his back problems continued and he missed 37 games during the 1991–92 season. During the 1992 Eastern Conference semi-finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Bird missed four of the seven games due to recurring back problems.
This white shooting jacket was issued to Larry Bird for the 1993-94 Boston Celtics season. Understandably, the Celtics staff were unsure if Bird was coming back for the 1993-94 season with the team. They prepared the button up jacket as if he was coming back and it originates from a team source. It was ready to go for the season but on August 18, 1992, Bird announced his retirement. Following Bird’s departure, the Celtics promptly retired his jersey number 33.
The jacket never made it on to the court but it serves as part of his legacy as the team continuing wearing them for the season. “CELTICS” adorns the chest in classic green/yellow lettering along with a small NBA logo embroidered above it (slight blue pen mark near it). Both sleeves are accented by shamrock patches as well as green/white ribbing. The back features his green nameplate, “BIRD”. Two tags reside in the interior with a NBA Exclusivity – “Designed and Tailored Exclusively for Boston Celtics” – 1993-94 and the Champion size 48 (+3 Length). Overall, a great authentic game issued shooting jacket that was part of the Hall of Famer’s career.
