Bela Lugosi will forever be known for his role as Bram Stoker’s “Dracula.” Lugosi started his acting career on the stage in Hungary in several Shakespearean plays and other major roles, and also appeared in several silent films of the Cinema of Hungary. It’s ironic that Lugosi was born in what was then Transylvania. With minimal make-up, Lugosi depended solely on his voice to create the immortal character. So successful he was in the role that every adaptation that followed was modeled after his portrayal.
Presented is a rare opportunity to own Lugosi’s autograph on a program in a display. Bela Lugosi played Count Dracula in a touring production of the 1924 play Dracula in 1951. The production was staged by John C. Mather and William H. Williams, and premiered at the Theatre Royal in Brighton on April 30, 1951. The tour ended at the Theatre Royal in Portsmouth on October 13, 1951, and was Lugosi’s final performance as Count Dracula.
Here he signed the program from the production dated to 1951 in red felt tip pen (“9”). It was placed in a display (22×24) with a black and white photo and plaque.
