 Early 1900s’s Chatham University Chatham Sisters Collection -Vaudeville Performing Dress, Metal Handbag Signed Contract, Ephemera

Obtained from the historical area of Pittsburgh, this grouping of Chatham history features a moment of time when the women of Chatham (Sisters) danced, sang, and performed for the crowds. Well, this grouping is said to belong to the performers Chatham Sisters.  The group of photos and advertisements seemed to belong to the Theatre CO and Vaudeville Booking Agency because they are the performer’s promotional photos. Typically, the agency would keep these photographs on file to send to clients.  The creme de la creme of this grouping is the Vaudeville-style Dress and handbag.  

The dark brown beaded dress is made of nylon, chiffon, and cotton mix.  No tagging or size is present.  It is delicately beaded throughout the sleeves, from the top to the bottom of the dress.  The belt wraps around the dress and also features beading.  The dress is in VG condition.  Obviously, worn to perform.  Perhaps you can find the dress in one of the many photographs featuring the dolls of the early 20th century.

 Complimenting this dress is the metal mesh handbag meant to carry only the essentials: “lipstick and a small mirror.”  Only about 2.5 inches long and 4 inches wide, this relic certainly is a statement from that era.
