Description
The 2011 IZOD IndyCar World Championship was the scheduled final race of the 2011 IZOD IndyCar series. It was to be run at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada USA on October 16, 2011, and was scheduled for 200 laps around the facility’s 1.544 mile oval. The race, however, was cancelled after twelve laps had been run. Contact between drivers Wade Cunningham and James Hinchcliffe triggered a massive chain reaction crash that involved fifteen of the thirty-three entrants in the event and resulted in the death of former IndyCar Series champion Dan Wheldon. Open wheel racing has not returned to the circuit since the incident.
Presented is a promotional IndyCar racing sign (24″ x 72″) that was at the MGM Grand back in 2011. It was announcing the premier event in Las Vegas that was happening that weekend on the racetrack. It was for the 2011 Izod IndyCar World Champions Race and some of the drivers were at the casino for event promotion. After the promotional appearance was over, the sign was autographed by the drivers. Around their respective photos on the display signers in black felt tip (“9”) include Dan Weldon, Tony Kanaan, Will Power, Helio Castroneves and Takuma Sato. Sadly, this was Dan Weldon’s last race as he died that fateful day where racing was changed forever.
