Presented is an 8×10 NASA photo autographed by astronaut, Ellison Onizuka. He signed the photo in black felt tip (“9-10”) and inscribed To Sonja — With Best Wishes”. The photo has a postmark dated January, 24, 1985 with stamp. On January 24, 1985, the Space Shuttle Discovery launched on mission STS-51C, the first dedicated mission for the Department of Defense. The mission deployed an Air Force Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) booster. The Discovery landed on January 27, concluding the three-day mission. The photo has the official NASA stamping with caption on the verso.
Ellison Onizuka was an American astronaut, engineer, and U.S. Air Force flight test engineer from Kealakekua, Hawaii, who successfully flew into space with the Space Shuttle Discovery on STS-51-C. He died in the destruction of the Space Shuttle Challenger, on which he was serving as Mission Specialist for mission STS-51-L. Onizuka was the first Asian American and the first person of Japanese ancestry to reach space.
