Presented is a NASA Project Mecury display signed by 8. The astronaut signers include: Gordon Cooper, Scott Carpenter, John Glenn, Virgil “Gus” Grissom, Wally Schirra, Alan Shepard and Deke Slayton. Shepard added a neat inscription on his 8×10 photo, “Would you fly with this guy?” Carpenter added an inscription to his photo with the mission details, “Aurora 7 – 24, May 1962”. Four including Glenn, Schirra, Grissom and other signed a commemorative Project Mercury sheet with John F. Kennedy. For Deke Slayton, a handwritten memo note with autograph is included in the display. Gordon Cooper signed the 8×10 in the top corner in black felt tip (“9″) with the mission inscription to compete the piece. The display measures in at 26″ x 33”.

Project Mercury was the first human spaceflight program of the United States, running from 1958 through 1963. An early highlight of the Space Race, its goal was to put a man into Earth orbit and return him safely, ideally before the Soviet Union. Taken over from the US Air Force by the newly created civilian space agency NASA, it conducted 20 uncrewed developmental flights (some using animals), and six successful flights by astronauts. The program, which took its name from Roman mythology, cost $2.76 billion (adjusted for inflation). The astronauts were collectively known as the “Mercury Seven”, and each spacecraft was given a name ending with a “7” by its pilot.
